(press release Savannah Sand Gnats - Vince Caffiero
Savannah, Ga.- For the second time this season, Sand Gnats pitcher Dario Alvarez has been named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week. Over his last two starts, the lefty has refused to allow an earned run, going 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and just two walks.
On Monday, June 30, Alvarez held the Rome Braves to just two hits and one walk over five innings, generating eight swings-and-misses.
He followed that up with another stellar start on Saturday, July 5, against the Hickory Crawdads. The 25-year-old hurled 5 1/3 innings allowing just three hits and one unearned run, while striking out another eight batters.
The Santiago, Dominican Republic, native has scorched the league, notching a perfect 6-0 record with a team-leading 86 strikeouts. Alvarez has also pitched out of the Sand Gnats bullpen to great effect, affording manager Luis Rojas more wiggle room within his 25-man roster.
Back on May, 14, Alvarez tied a career high, racking up 12 strikeouts in five innings of scoreless ball against the Greenville Drive.
Alvarez pitched with the Phillies Organization in the Dominican Summer League during 2007-2009. He spent 2010 and 2011 pitching in Panama and then Venezuela for unaffiliated teams until he was signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2012.
