Chatham Football Club Holding Open Tryouts for Boys and Girls Academy Teams

Chatham Football Club holding open tryouts for boys and girls Academy teams

Experienced soccer players ages 6-14 encouraged to tryout for affordable club soccer with elite coaching and “limited travel” for the older players.

SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah’s newest and most family-friendly soccer club, Chatham Football Club, will host open tryouts for girls and boys for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 seasons May 14-16 at the Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex in Savannah.

For players born from 2008-2011, there is a $15 tryout fee and for players born from 2004-2007 there is a $20 tryout fee.  Tryout dates and times for 2011-2007 born players are May 14-16 from 5:30 until 6:30 pm, and 2006-2004 birth years are May 14-16 from 6:45-8 pm. Interested players should plan to attend two of the tryout sessions in order to allow the coaches the opportunity for proper evaluation.

Chatham Football Club was launched in 2017 as an affordable, family-friendly soccer club committed to developing young players within the ages of 6-14 years old.  The club’s head coach and academy director is Michael Townsend, who formerly formed a girls’ academy team on Hilton Head Island in 2004 that produced most of the players that were the core of Hilton Head High School girls’ state championship teams from 2011-2014. Townsend also sent 7 players to play NCAA Division 1 college soccer, and his team won a South Carolina State Cup in 2006 and reunited in 2015 to win a club national championship.

“This club was launched for families who want elite soccer development but are tired of paying astronomically high fees for uniforms, travel and other unnecessary expenses without the core high quality training to back it all up,” said Chatham FC co-founder Josh McIntosh “We believe in a gradual, consistent learning process based on proper European style training and development.   This starts and ends with kids completely enjoying soccer while learning the right way to play based off proven global training standards.”

Chatham Football Club’s mission is to provide a pathway for each individual player to fulfill their personal potential while being respectful of the schedules, budgets and expectations of modern family life. For players ages 6-12, teams play local games against local clubs and attend local tournaments, but there is no extensive travel for this age group in order to place an emphasis on player development.

As players get older and more developed, their age groups are provided with more competitive team games and optional tournaments based on ability and commitment. Training and technical development is always game related, and players are provided with the time and opportunity to develop in addition to securing core and specific positional skills.

“Participation in soccer incorporates diverse levels of ability, commitment and desire as well as diverse expectations and outcomes,” Townsend said. “Chatham Football Club is attempting to shift the academy soccer paradigm within the Savannah area by opening the door to a more diverse group of players through lower overall costs and carefully managed travel limited competition.”
