Say it Ain’t So Nick

It is amazing at what the Auburn football team has done the last two weeks, first a miracle tip ball against Georgia to win. You would have thought that was a play that would last for the ages in the Tigers football archives. It would be the number-one greatest play in their storied football history, but no lighting strikes twice within seven days.

This past weekend head coach Nick Saban of Alabama petitions for the officials to put one more second on the clock, and they go to replay, and it happens, but what happens in that one second will last forever. Being a head football coach and I know it’s only on the high school level you practice for a game-winning field from your kickers longest made field goal in practice. You know your players range.  Saban felt his kicker could make it from 57 yards. You believe in your players. You never think that the opposing team would return it for a game-winning touchdown, but you do practice this situation in case it happens.

Well, it did and you know Nick Saban is thinking in his mind as he said in his press conference, “he had never seen that happen before.” Believe me you practice for that one time it could happen, but as the Alabama faithful lost hope of another national championship, they are saying, “Say it Ain’t So Nick.”
Now who will be playing for this year’s BCS National Championship, and it looks like it won’t be the Crimson Tide.

To Be or Not to Be Recruited

To Be or Not to Be Recruited

On this month’s ESPN magazine cover, we see a wide-eyed youngster ready to play football. When you dig in deeper in the story, we have a 15-year-old football player named Dylan Moses with exceptional athletic traits. He has college offers from a lot of major college football programs with the SEC top dogs LSU and Alabama being in the lead. Right now, he has God-given talent, but what age is it all right to be recruited?

The NCAA has a rule book on how college coaches can recruit. NCAA rules prohibit college coaches from starting contact with recruits before their junior years, but if an athlete calls a coach or attends a camp, a verbal offer can be made by the college. Nothing is set in stone; however, until  an athlete signs a national letter of intent as a senior. Head coaches must have their program abide by these rules.

So, what age is it appropriate to recruit an athlete? Who makes that decision? Is it the parents, AAU coaches, college coaches, and sports agents? We hear more and more about younger athletes being recruited, and it amazes me that these athletes can't even enjoy their youth, middle school, and high school careers.  I mean professional basketball follows athletes as early as the sixth grade. To me that's amazing and ridiculous.

Currently, we know there is more money to be had by signing a professional contract than ever before. Going to college to get an education or  is it just a stepping stone. Hence a college career is the doorway to this money. Some professional sports have restriction when athletes can sign a professional contract, but money is always a key factor in an athlete’s decisions about what colleges will get them to the next level, being a professional athlete.

Therefore, college coaches are finding kids earlier and younger. It is just a new cycle that is becoming very intense and crazy as we can tell how early athletes are being recruited. To be or not to be a recruited today is a tough choice because of the money you can receive from professional sports. We are hearing more stories about it more and more. Can we just let the kids be kids during their teenage years? I wish they would.

Coaching is not Old School Anymore

The days of using verbal abuse and sometimes physical abuse as ways to coach are long gone in the coaching profession. Let’s just take a look at Rutgers University as an example. First, the head men’s basketball coach and know the new athletic director. What is more astounding is your past behaviors will also follow you because of today’s social media, the Internet, Facebook, tweeter, etc.

Being a teacher/coach for the past 34 years I have lived by a rule, treat your athletes as you would do your students in your classroom. Yes, it is hard to remember if I have ever done anything in a negative manner. My former players could. They have the avenue now to make it public and that’s what coaches should remember, the impact you leave on a young mind sometimes is never forgotten.

Erk Russell courtesy GSU Athletics

We as coaches must be role models in everything, we do. From youth coaches to professional coaches, we have many eyes examining our coaching ways. Coaches need to bear in mind that to teach is to coach as is to coach is to teach. Remember you influence so many and as the great Georgia and Georgia Southern Coach Erk Russell said to his players, “Do Right” and as coaches, we can do the same.

The Latest Soccer Region Standings & Rankings

The Latest Soccer Region Standings & Rankings

As a society we constantly want to be on the top in anything, we do. We are regularly asking who is number one, who's the team to beat, and of course who's the best. Throughout the season, the mass media comes out with a lot of rankings.
In Georgia, we rely on many different media sources. Such as, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution high school rankings, Max prep sports, Rivals.com, Georgia Prep County, Laxpower.com and Eurosportscoreboard to see who is number one at any point in the season. In reality, though it all comes down to the final standings, region tournaments, and state playoffs to find out who really is number one.

Most publications try to keep us abreast on whose number one based on season records. My question is do these sources send people out to evaluate these teams. This probably doesn't happen because it takes time and money. So until we come up with a flawless system, we will follow these rankings throughout the season until we get the state playoffs and crown a state champion.
As of right now these are the only Savannah area schools that are ranked in EUROSPORTscoreboard.com (http://www.eurosportscoreboard.com/page_state.php?s=GA) Georgia High School soccer rankings. Check it out and see if you agree or disagree that included the most-recent region soccer standings. If you have any corrections, please make comment, or e-mail me at K DeMasi@Hotmail.com or semi-a message me on Facebook at the Karl DeMasi Sports Report. The soccer state rankings are first followed by the most current region standings I could find. Some team’s records have not been updated.

Latest Local 2013 GHSA Baseball Standings

Latest Local 2013 GHSA Baseball Standings

Searching for region or conference standings is getting harder and tougher every year. With all the mass media we have it should be easier and simpler to find the most updated standings. The reason is that being a sports fanatic and getting close to the state playoffs it is nice to see where teams are in their respectful regions. It also makes it easier to figure out who has a shot on moving on to post-season play and who doesn’t.

So I have put together the most current regional Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Baseball Standings I could come up with. The season is almost at the half way point, and it is interesting finding out where our local prep baseball teams stand. The region season needs to be completed by April 27th, and all regions have to report their region winners and playoff teams by April 29th to GHSA.

If you have any corrections, please feel free to email me at kdemasi@hotmail.com, message me on Facebook at The Karl DeMasi Sports Report, or tweet me at twitter@kdsportsreport. I will update soccer, tennis, and lacrosse during the week.
