Taylor Baham is Awarded NCCAA All American- Second Team

Former standout athlete for Islands High School Taylor Baham Class of 2013, who now plays basketball at Johnson University in Tennessee was named to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA)  All American- Second Team in Division 2 women's basketball. Taylor was selected by coaches in attendance at the Nationals Basketball Tournament which means that coaches believe that she is one of the top 15 players out of the estimated 350 women's players in division 2 women's basketball around the country.

On the season, Baham averaged 13.4 points per game, shot 50% from the floor, 72% from the free-throw line, grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game and averaged 1.4 blocks per game for the Royals. Taylor also played on the Johnson University volleyball team.

In high school, Taylor was a three sport athlete participating in volleyball, basketball, and track.  Baham, was a finalist for the Hollis Stacy Award given to Savannah’s most versatile female high school athlete, a Savannah Morning News All-Greater Savannah first-team selection as a setter in volleyball and a third-team selection as a forward in basketball.

The Dean Still Lives On

Coaches and teachers touch many lives while they are alive. We remember the extra care and time that these dedicated people have given to us and of course to all their students and athletes. As time goes by, it gets tougher and tougher to remember the young faces and names that we have come in contact with. Believe me, they live in our memories and heart, but now after Dean Smith passed away he still gives back when he is gone and Dean Smith still lives on.

In Dean Smith's will, he still want to give back to his former players, and that was to have dinner on him. Dean Smith left money, $200.00, in his will to every University of North Carolina letterman that played under him.  Smith coached basketball at UNC from 1961-97. That is 36 years of touching so many lives.

So, how many former players did Dean Smith coach at North Carolina? About 175, according to the UNC basketball PR department, meaning approximately $35,000 of Dean Smith's will went to players he personally coached. Yes as coaches and teachers, we touch so many lives, but those lives touch us every minute of every day, and Coach Smith wanted his players to know that made a difference in his life, in my opinion.

Once again, a coach teaches life’s lessons. This is a great example of one of those lessons.  It is better to receive a gift then to take a gift. Dean Smith was given a lot of gifts in his athletes who played for him over his career, but he always knew how to give to his players. The Dean still lives on.

Always fun when the Budweiser Clydesdales visit the SAV!

It is always a lot of fun when the Budweiser Clydesdales (horses) arrive for the Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah Georgia. These majestic animals are housed  at The Southern Eagle Distributing in Garden City, Georgia four days before the Parade. Hundreds of people come out to get a close look at these eye-opening  creatures before the day of the parade.
I would  be remised if I didn't thank ESPNcoastal.com and ESPN Radio Savannah Am 1400 & 104.3 Fm for letting me part of their live broadcast from  Southern Eagle Distributing. In my opinion, they are one of the most popular attractions of the parade along with Brewer the Budweiser dog.

Bethesda Academy Head Coach Clevan Thompson on The Karl DeMasi Sports Report

The Bethesda Academy boy's  basketball program captured their second state championship in school history on February 28th. The man behind the program is Head Coach Clevan Thompson. Thompson has been at Bethesda Academy for the past 13 years as an assistant  coach (eight years), and now he  completed his fifth season as the man  in command. Clevan or Coach Clev as his players call him comes Florida and was an athlete at Glades Central High, which is a power in high school sports. Thompson played football, basketball, tennis and soccer at the school and then came to Savannah  to play football at Savannah State, where he graduated.

As far as winning his second championship in five years he gives a lot of credit to his players, his school, and his predecessor, well known basketball coach and a sports official Mickey Minick. "Coach Minick taught me  a lot. It was not just the X's and O's, but how to relate to the student-athletes, and he is a big part on how this program was developed and grown" stated Thompson. "I have the hardest working group of players. They have a strong bond and work hard on and off the court. The players now that their success comes from being involved in the classroom and what they do athletically thorough out the year." Furthermore, Thompson feels with the support Bethesda Academy's administration and faculty; the athletics program at Bethesda has flourished. Congratulations Coach Thompson and the Blazers of Bethesda Academy on bringing the South Carolina Independent Association Championship back to the SAV!
