On the weekend of July 30, 2017, over 1700 gymnasts from 21 states invaded the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center for the 2017 YMCA National Gymnastics Meet. The Islands YMCA Gymnastics team won 130 medals. One of the biggest winners at the 2017 championship was nine-year-old Level 2 gymnast Kylee Jiran.


Kylee came in first in Level 2 all-around. It was her initial time ever competing at nationals. Level 2 in gymnastics is an advanced beginner level using four events. The gymnast must successfully complete level 1 to go to next level with a minimum age of 6. What is impressive about Kylee, she has only been involved in gymnastics for one year. 

Kylee took first place on the parallel bars (9.60), on the balance beam (9.80), third in the floor exercise (9.50), and nineteenth on the vault (9.25). The combination of the her four scores totaled 38.150 was tops and e
nough for Kylee to claim the 2017 YMCA National YMCA Level 2 Gold Medal. Congratulations Kylee on a great job.

Why I Love this Athlete – Tim Tebow

Lately all we hear about is the acronym GOAT, the Greatest Of All Time used in sports discussions. As an avid sport fanatic, I've seen a lot of GOATS. It is very tough to pick one athlete out for each sport.

In my opinion Tim Tebow, when he played football at the University of Florida, can be ranked as one of the greatest college quarterbacks ever. Tebow won the Heisman trophy and TWO NCAA football national championship with the Gators. You never counted out Florida with him at quarterback.

How can you overlook that? What I love about this guy is his dedication on doing right, his commitment to be the best at whatever he's doing and his love for sports, his fellow man and life.

Therefore, he's trying his hand at baseball and the New York Mets are moving up him through the chain of minor-league baseball. It seems the Mets have moved him up quickly because of his stature as well known athlete.  Tim's trials at Low "A" level with the Columbia Fireflies was below average looking at his statistics. The New York Mets organization felt they needed to move him up to the High “A” level with the St Lucie Mets. Why we don't know based on statistics. This has been discussed repeatedly.

Was it because the Mets know he would bring people to the park to see him succeed or fail. Tebow is turning heads since his promotion. Take a look at his statistics since he's joined the St. Lucie Mets it's pretty impressive. Tebow has a batting average of .321 in 17 games, three home runs; eleven runs batted in and only has struck out nine times. Not bad for a guy that was promoted for his name.


We have all heard the expression nice guys finish last coined by the great New York Giants baseball manager Leo Durocher. For me, I hope this nice guy finishes first because he is a professional athlete our youth can look up to. That’s why I love this guy! 

Who’s on the Winning Base Path in 1^st Half of the 2017 MLB Season?

The Atlanta Braves got a new pad this year, Sun Trust Park. They already have surpassed the million mark in attendance and are averaging 6,000 more fans at home games then last year. This is not too shabby for a team that has lost over 180 games over the last two seasons. Nobody expected Atlanta to be in second place at the halfway point and only three games under 500. There have been bright spots and disappointments. 

Mr. Brave goes to Freddie Freeman. Before Freddie’s injury, he led the National League in home runs and was Mr. Clutch. The man is dedicated. He should have been out ten weeks, but he returned in eight and making an impact right away. In six games, back Freeman has three doubles and two home runs as well as the .385 batting average.

We have to acknowledge the Braves front office. Bringing in Matt Adams from the St. Louis Cardinals was a great move right after Freeman went down with a fractured wrist and was placed on the disable list. Adams had several walk-off hits and with the Braves is batting .292, has 13 home runs and 35 runs batted in. Matt has made the Braves aware he needs to stay in Atlanta.

Again, the front office is realizing what they need to do to win. Letting their young pitchers pitch. Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb are showing they can throw the rock in the MLB Show. The top brass finally realized that Bartolo Colon was a disappointment. The Braves released Bartolo Colon and must face the fact that sticking with Colon was not a good move.

The Braves veterans have been holding their own.  The Braves brought in experience last year with Matt Kemp, Brandon Phillips, and Nick Markakis. All three players have been clutch at one point or another this season. We can’t forget about the Braves Only All-Star Ender Inciarte. Ender leads the team based on at-bats in batting average, on-base percentage, and hits. The Braves are still waiting for local product Dansby Swanson to shine with his bat, but he has saved some games with his glove with some top ten defensively plays.

Overall, the Braves were not supposed to compete and were projected to lose another 90 games. Atlanta enters the second half three games under .500 and has shown a lot of bright spots. If the young pitchers improve, and the veterans hold the team together. The Braves are on the winning path in the 2017 MLB season. The second half will be interesting for “Da Braves.”
