Coastal Empire Weightlifters Successful

Schwarznenegger Honors Coastal Empire Weightlifters Lifters

 Columbus, OH-Coastal Empire Weightlifters Tayler Jakubsen, Nikki Hanebrink and Terry Roberson, Jr lifted at the 25th annual Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, OH March 2 & 3rd. Tayler Jakubsen, a senior at Benedictine Military Academy , snatched 135kg, clean and jerked 156kg, totaling 291kg in the 94kg division to win best overall Junior lifter and the Columbus Rotary$2,000 college scholarship .

Coach Kerri Goodrich attended the scholarship award luncheon on Tayler’s behalf. The scholarship award was presented by Arnold Scharwzenegger .

Terry Roberson, Jr., age 12, had an epic competition-breaking 3 national records in the youth 13& Under, 35kg division. Roberson, weighing 33kg, broke the national records in the snatch , clean and jerk and total. Roberson snatched 40kg, clean and jerked 50kg, totaling 90kg.

Nikki Hanebrink lifted in the junior 63kg division, taking 4th overall. Hanebrink snatched 60kg, clean and jerked 71kg, totaling 131kg. Hanebrink attends the IB program at Johnson High.

Coastal Empire Weightlifters will be hosting the Cheryl Haworth Classic on Saturday, March 23rd at Performance Initiatives Athletic Facility. Lifting will begin at 10am and admission is free. PI is located at 2021 Tenenssee Avenue.

Lady Bulldogs and Lady Cavaliers Looking for another  Final Four Appearance

The Beach Lady Bulldog and Calvary Lady Cavalier basketball programs are regular participants in the Georgia High School Association State Basketball playoffs. Tonight these two teams are looking for another “Final Four” Appearances. The Lady Bulldogs reached the final four in 2009 and the Lady Cavaliers in 2011. Here are their respective match ups tonight.

Girl’s Class AAA

A.E. Beach vs. Chapel Hill

Both teams enter tonight's contest with very impressive records. Beach is 25-3 overall and Chapel Hill is 26-3. What’s more remarkable both are undefeated at home and both have lost two times on the road and once on a neutral court. Beach comes in ranked 3rd in Class AAA while Chapel Hill is ranked 9.

As far as scoring Beach averages 62 points a game and Chapel Hill 55. Each has played two common opponents, Southeast Bulloch and Central High School. Beach has beaten Southeast Bulloch 3 times, not one game being closer than 20, while Chapel beat Southeast Bulloch once by 17. As far as Central High school, Chapel Hill split their series losing 47-45 and then beating Central 55-52, whereas Beach beat Central in the state playoffs by 28.

Both teams share the ball as far as scoring goes. Beaches leading scorer is sophomore Ilyn Spann, who averages 12.6 points a game and for Chapel Hill is led by senior Ashley Chestnut who averages 12.8 points a game. Tip off tonight is 5:30 PM at A.E. Beach High School in Savannah.

Girl’s Private Class A

Calvary Day School vs. Pace Academy

Calvary comes into tonight’s match up with a record of 25-3 ranked 5th in Class Private Schools power rankings, and Pace Academy is 15-13 and ranked 15th. As far as seeding for the GHSA Tournament Calvary was seeded number 2 by and Pace Academy 10th. Calvary has only lost one home game, which was back in December.

Offensively Calvary averages 58 points a game while Pace averages 38.4. They both have played one common opponent Landmark Christian; Calvary beat Landmark 47-46 in early January and Pace beat Landmark by 30, 53-23, on February 2. Both teams have played great defense, Calvary holds opponents to 37.5 points a game and Pace’s opponents have averaged 37.9 points a game.

There are some key players to watch. For Calvary senior forward Alexus Parker has been one of the premier girl prep players this season. She is averaging 22 points a game, 8.6 rebounds, and 2 steals a game. Sophomore forward Abigail Lewis is scoring 10.7 points a game and senior guard Olivia Harrell scores 10 points a game and averages 4 assists a game. Pace Academy is led by a couple of Underclassman, sophomore forward Hannah Ferry and junior guard Evelyn Hobbs. Ferry averages 9.2 points a game and 6.7 rebounds while Hobbs averages 9.1 points per game, 3.7 assists, and 4.8 steals. Tip off tonight is 6 PM at Calvary Day School in Savannah.

Eight Savannah Area Teams Bounce into Elite Eight

Savannah once again is well represented in the GHSA State Basketball Playoffs. We had 13 teams make it to the Sweet Sixteen.  Eight Savannah Area Teams Bounce into the Elite Eight starting tomorrow night. Check out to see where these local cagers play and get out and root your team on and we all are dreaming of one of these teams to bring a state championship back to the "Coastal Empire."
