(October 21, 2016) SAVANNAH, GA – The Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame has appointed officers for 2017 and opened the nomination period for the Class of 2017.

The newly appointed officers include president David Sipple, Jr., vice president Jeff Karesh, secretary Jimmy Ray and treasurer Jason Bush. The officers as well as the other members of the GSAHOF board of trustees play a vital role in evaluating nominations from the community for new inductees.

The GSAHOF is now accepting nominations for Athletes and Citation honorees to be considered for induction in the Class of 2017. The nomination period concludes on January 31, 2017 and each nomination must contain a complete resume with supporting documentation using the nomination forms and guidelines available online at www.gsahof.com.

Each year, the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame accepts nominations from the community for Athletes and Citation honorees and then evaluates those nominations to determine who will be inducted. In order for the Hall of Fame to truly serve its function and fulfill its mission of preserving the history and legacy of Savannah sports, the entire community needs to be involved in the process of selecting nominees for induction.

“Participation by the entire community is vital to the success of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame,” Sipple said. “In order for the GSAHOF to be truly representative of Savannah’s rich sports history, we need to receive nominations of outstanding men and women from every part of the community and in a variety of roles. We want to identify the athletes, coaches, mentors and other influential members of our community who have shaped and continue to shape athletics in Savannah.”

For a candidate to be considered as an Athlete, the athlete must have spent his or her formative years (participating in area schools) in Savannah and must be retired from competition for at least five years or be at least 40 years old. Distinguished athletes from any sport may be nominated for consideration.

A Citation Honoree may be a person or an organization that has made substantial contribution to athletics via coaching, promoting or supporting athletics in the area. Citation Honorees do not have to have spent their formative years in Savannah to be nominated.

The Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1965 to honor the achievements and contributions of the athletic standouts and leaders in and around Savannah. Plaques for each inductee hang upstairs in the mezzanine at Savannah Civic Center, and each year the GSAHOF hosts a banquet at the Savannah Civic Center to honor the new inductees, recognize the Lawton M. Calhoun Award and M.A. Spellman Special Award winners and acknowledge the most outstanding male and female high school athletes in the Greater Savannah area.

All nomination forms and guidelines can be found at www.gsahof.com. Please email questions to info@gsahof.com or call (912) 441-7012.
