The 61st Ashley Dearing Award Nominations 2014

It’s that time of year again, The 61st Ashley Dearing Award. The award is named after the late Ashley Dearing, a former Savannah auto dealer and strong supporter of local high school sports. It is given to a male high school athlete in Savannah, who has participated in football, basketball and a spring sport. Ashley loved high school sports in Savannah, and it is evident in his Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame bio.

“Dearing has been a long-time booster of local sports and is most noted for his annual award to the most versatile high school athlete, which he has been awarding since 1953. A year later, Dearing also began awarding the Dearing Cup, presented to the Armstrong Atlantic State University basketball player with the best foul shot percentage. Dearing has served as a member of the Savannah Recreation Commission, the Board of Trustees of the Victor B. Jenkins Boys Club, and the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame Trustees. He has also been on the advisory council of the Chatham County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He received the Honorary F Award from the University of Florida for interest in athletics and sports programs at the school. Dearing was named “1969 Man of the Year” for service to youth by the Savannah Co-Ed Hi-Y Council by the Savannah YMCA.”

This year there are 60 nominations as listed below. The 61st Ashley Dearing Award recipient will be announced shortly. The nominee that receives the most votes from the Ashley Dearing Award committee is declared the winner. The committee is made up of members of the media, WJCL, WSAV, WTOC, and the Savannah Morning News and all athletic directors in Chatham County who have varsity football, basketball, and varsity spring sports. Good luck to all candidates.
