This week’s Wetherington Chiropractic Clinic Athlete of the Week is Indy Vassilev – 07.25.2015
Indy Vassilev a local soccer player was selected to play on the U.S.
National U-14 Soccer Team. What makes this interesting is that Windsor Forest
High School Head Soccer Coach Cam Turner stated Indy is the first player from
Savannah to ever make an appearance on a U.S. National team. Vassilev has
played soccer in Savannah throughout his young life. Indy has been part of
local soccer playing with the Savannah United program and the Savannah Storm
program.
Playing soccer with these two elite soccer programs got Indy seen by the IMG
Academy, where he will be a freshman this fall. Indy started at IMG as an
eighth grader last year which is in Bradenton Florida and specializes in
developing the student/athlete and is world known as one of the leading sports
academies. Then in April Indy was at the U.S. Soccer U14 Boys National team camp, and
Indy stood out as one of the top players and was selected. Vassilev had the experience
of playing soccer in Croatia with the U.S. National U-14 Soccer team during May
2015.
Indy whose given full name is Indiana is the son of Dencho Vassilev who came
to the U.S. to play soccer at the University of Mobile in Alabama. Vassilev was
a first-team All-American NAIA selections in 1993. Dencho also won the NAIA
tournament MVP honors that year when the University of Mobile reached the NAIA
Final Four. Vassilev wound up in Savannah in 1997 to play for the Savannah Rug
Ratz, which was a professional indoor team that lasted only two seasons from
1997-1998. Dencho then decided to stay in Savannah.
